For many decades thread rolling machines with planetary dies are the most productive machine tools for cold forming, especially for rolling of headed screws.
Planetary dies are composed of a roll and a segment, between which the nails are rolled. The roll is mounted on the thread rolling machine and rotates around its central axis. One segment is mounted next to it and fixed to the machine. The nails (with both the head and the point already made) are fed into the system from one side. When they come in contact with the moving roll they start to rotate and are transported in this way between roll and segment. Planetary dies greatly improves the production efficiency, compared with the flat rolling dies and thread rolling dies.
This process is also usable for workpieces with higher tensile strength or for special nails or screws with heads. Even bigger dimensions for this 100% grinded dies can be ordered.
A big challenge is always grinding of outer segment dies. Their different radius designs on one hand is needed for feed on the other hand for forming of thread.
